“The bird, the pin, the song, the berries, the watch, the cracker, the dress that burst into flames. I am the mockingjay" - The style of this quote is very interesting. It lists different things which symbolize multiple events throughout the book that led up to this moment. The style enhances the quotation because it catches the readers attention. It stands out because of the unique style it was written in. Also, the last line represents symbolism, and she is the face of the rebellion.


“This is no place for a girl on fire” - This quote is when they get the first look at the arena. They are all surrounded by water on their pedestals. It goes back to the first Hunger Games when she wore the flames during the parade. This represents symbolism, as she is known the the people in the Capitol as The Girl on Fire.

At the beginning of the book, Katniss thought she was free. Her survival in the games ensured that her family would never starve again. However, as her past catches up to her, she needs to face it in order to keep her loved ones safe. Her relationships with Gale and Peeta gradually become more and more complicated. Once she discovers that she will be participating in the next games as well, her outlook on her life changes. While she the mockingjay of freedom for many people, she decides that she does not care about living anymore. This is because she feels like an encaged bird; she is just a pawn that the Capitol controls. Her goal in the games is to keep Peeta alive. This is a big change for her from the beginning of the book. Previously, she never even talked to Peeta once they won the 74th Hunger Games. Now, she is willing to lay down her life for the person she had a fake relationship with.

'Mockingjay of freedom' and 'she is just a pawn' are both metaphors.
'Encaged bird' is an oxymoron because birds are viewed upon as free, and encaged is the opposite.

“As a reminder to the rebels that even the strongest among them cannot overcome the power of the Capitol, the male and female tributes will be reaped from their existing pool of victors”. I chose this quotation because it sets the rest of the events in the book. It is a crucial conflict because Katniss is going back into the games. She barely survived the first one, and suffered plenty of emotional trauma. This second trip into the arena will surely change her as a person.

“Then suddenly, as I was suggesting I take over the daily snare run, he took my face in his hands and kissed me”. This is a major conflict in the book because it shows that there is still a romantic side to Katniss and Gale’s relationship. It creates many problems for Katniss, as she is supposed to pretend to be in love with Peeta. As well, she doesn’t even know how she feels about either of them. The problem of Katniss’s decision between Peeta and Gale is the main conflict of her personal life.


“President Snow pays victor Katniss Everdeen a visit” - This headline depicts the conflict between President Snow and Katniss. Her scheme in the games with the berries caused unrest in the other districts, which required Snow to tell her to convince everyone that it was not an act of defiance.

“Victors are no longer safe; Quarter Quell endangers the lives of the protected” - This headline is about how Katniss is required to go back and participate in the 75th Hunger Games. This is a conflict between the protagonist and the Capitol. Since she is the symbol of the rebellion, they had to make a statement to show that the Capitol still has absolute control over all the districts.

“Are the Star-Crossed lovers really what they seem?” - This headline is about how Katniss does not know who she really loves. Her relationship with Gale is complicated, but has potentially reached a new level once they are reunited after her life threatening experience. However, her time in the games has allowed her to connect with Peeta, and their pretended love has damaged her emotions.

“Breakout at the 75th Hunger Games” - This headline talks about how Katniss is rescued from the games at the end of the book. It determines what is going to happen in her life from then on. The conflict created from this moment is the decisions that she is going to have to make later on. These decisions will either save or end lives.

“District 12 disintegrated” - This headline creates a major conflict for Katniss. Her hometown was destroyed by the Capitol. The emotions she would feel discovering this after waking up from her injuries would be drastic. The conflict would be overcoming her emotions. Whether she likes it or not, Katniss plays a big roll in the rebellion, and she can’t afford to make bad decisions based on negative emotions.

1. “Not only are we in the districts forced to remember the iron grip of the Capitol’s power each year, we are forced to celebrate it. And this year, I am one of the stars of the show”. This quote reveals that Katniss is just a pawn in the Capitol’s game. She feels trapped and helpless because of the power that they have over her and the districts. As well, it shows that she has no positive feelings for the Capitol at all, and all her emotions towards them are hate.


“to look down into the faces of the families whose children I have killed...”. This quote shows Katniss’s feelings towards the games which she competed in. She is still horrified by the things she was forced to do in order to stay alive. Being required to kill just to stay alive really impacted her emotionally and drastically changed her life. This quote shows that she regrets having to kill all the people that she did, and it may have some effects on her future.




2. HUNTER - This license plate represents Katniss because besides Gale, she is the only hunter in the district. She spends almost all of her free time in the woods setting snares and tracking big game. However, since she has become a victor and no longer needs food or money, she gives all the food to Gale’s family. Hunting in the woods is the one thing which can get Katniss away from the troubles which occurred during the games. It is the only place where she feels like herself.

"By the time I make it back to the fence that surrounds District 12, the sun is well up. As always, I listen a moment, but there's no telltale hum of electrical current running through the chain link". This quote shows that the district in which Katniss lives is quite poor compared to the others. As well, it appears more laid back due to the supposedly electrified fence always being off. This allows her to be able to leave the district whenever she wants because she can easily get through the outer fence.
